  • VanMoof rose to prominence with its minimalist design e-bikes and electronic innovations.
  • VanMoof leaves behind a legacy of innovation in the e-bike industry, having positively impacted urban mobility and changing the perception of e-bikes worldwide.

The rise of VanMoof

VanMoof, founded in 2009 by brothers Taco and Ties Carlier, aimed to redefine urban mobility by creating the perfect city bike. The company’s e-bikes were not only aesthetically distinctive, with a minimalist design, but also featured several electronic innovations such as Bluetooth connectivity and an integrated display. VanMoof expanded its reach to international markets, delivering e-bikes to 25 countries, hereby exporting Dutch bike culture.

One of VanMoof’s significant innovations was the VanMoof V hyperbike. Despite production delays, the VanMoof V promised to revolutionise the high-speed e-bike category. It was designed to be a true replacement for cars, optimised for long distances and capable of reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h. The innovative technology of the VanMoof V, such as automatic shifting, a new drivetrain, phone holder, and USB-C charging port, were integrated into their latest e-bikes, the S5 & A5.

Innovative features and challenges

VanMoof’s e-bikes offered advanced features like a powerful motor, automatic gear shifting, integrated anti-theft technology, and compatibility with Apple’s Find My network. The company was one of the first to integrate with Apple’s Find My network, offering users a unique way to track their bikes. Despite these innovations, the company faced challenges in delivering custom parts on time and recouping its investments.

One of the unique features offered by VanMoof was the ‘Touch Unlock’ feature. When set up in the VanMoof app, riders could simply press a button on the handlebar to unlock their bike, with the bike’s identity automatically verified via a Bluetooth connection. However, VanMoof’s financial difficulties led to concerns about the continuity of such features, particularly as they relied on connection with VanMoof’s servers.

Bankruptcy and the aftermath

Despite the innovative approach and initial success, VanMoof experienced significant financial difficulties. High investment costs in specially developed components, unexpected repair costs covered by the warranty, and considerable spending on international expansion led to substantial financial losses over time, culminating in the company’s bankruptcy. VanMoof’s financial struggles also resulted in the temporary closure of its stores, leaving customers unable to access their bikes.

In response to VanMoof’s bankruptcy, Belgian e-bike company Cowboy launched the Bikey app, designed to assist VanMoof bike owners. The app generates and stores the unique digital key for VanMoof bikes, enabling users to continue riding even if VanMoof’s servers go offline. Currently, the app supports S3 and X3 models, with plans to expand support to the new S5 and A5 e-bikes.

A legacy of innovation

Despite the challenges and ultimate bankruptcy, VanMoof’s legacy in the e-bike industry is undeniable. The company brought significant innovation to the market, changing the perception of e-bikes and positively impacting urban mobility. VanMoof’s demise has been met with sadness from industry peers who acknowledge the company’s impact on the e-bike industry.

As we reflect on VanMoof’s journey, it’s important to remember the company’s vision to redefine urban mobility, which it pursued wholeheartedly. Although it faced significant challenges, VanMoof’s innovations will continue to influence the e-bike industry, and its impact will not be forgotten.
