Imagine yourself as a real sailor aboard your favorite sailing team and witness up close the strategic maneuvering of World Cup sailors. This long-held dream of every sailing enthusiast becomes a reality with the Sailing+ Experience app, a technology developed by researchers at TU Delft, the university said in a (Dutch) press release.

  • TU Delft launches unique app with real-time sailing race experience, data and Augmented Reality for more exciting and insightful sailing viewing.
  • The app offers different perspectives, live statistics and on-board insights, making sailing races more engaging for both participants and spectators.

(AR), this innovative app offers an unprecedented viewing experience at the Sailing World Cup. It allows users to view sailing races from different angles and gain insight into the sailors’ tactical decisions. The launch of the Sailing+ Experience app will take place Monday, August 14, during the Allianz World Sailing Championship in Scheveningen, the Netherlands.

Goal development prototype

Elmar Eisemann and Berend Baas, researchers of the Computer Graphics and Visualization group at TU Delft, have been working with their team and the Innovation Sailing Centre to prototype the app over the past few years. This project grew out of the Watersportverbond’s desire to make sailing more appealing to a wider audience. “How can we convey the excitement of the sailors to the spectators?” wondered Eisemann and Baas during their search for this innovation. The Sailing+ Experience app, already tested during the Youth World Sailing Championship, offers spectators various perspectives of a sailing race. They can follow real-time race statistics, look inside the boats and get explanations about what is happening in the field and the boats.

Experience live sailing races through the app

On August 14 and 15, spectators of the Allianz World Sailing Championships will have the chance to enjoy the races live on a big screen at Festival by the Sea between 1:00 and 2:00 pm. As a highlight, Annemiek Bekkering, former Olympic sailor and also tournament director, will personally guide the audience through the races via the experience app.

Annemiek Bekkering, former Olympic sailor and project manager at Innovation Sailing Centre
“The Netherlands is known as one of the best sailing countries in the world, and we should be proud of that. With the Sailing Experience +app we can even better showcase the skills of the sailors and bring the racing at sea to the audience on the shore. You really get the feeling that you are participating in the race yourself and you see the opponents tearing by. This not only gives a great experience to the audience, but it also gives the sailors the recognition and appreciation they deserve.”

North Sea Living Lab

The development of the Sailing+ app took place within the European “Proeftuin op de Noordzee” project. This advanced test area of 10×10 nautical miles off the coast of The Hague brings together parties to develop smart technological solutions and innovative data-driven products that address societal issues around safety, sustainability, energy, sports and consumer experience.
