Ricco Fiorito is the winner of the Marc Cornelissen Brightlands Award 2022. Ricco Fiorito was presented the trophy by the Limburg representative Stephan Satijn (economy, Brightlands) during the Award Ceremony at Brightlands Smart Services Campus in the Dutch town of Heerlen. A cash prize of €35,000 is tied to the award, which is intended to further shape the winner’s circular ambitions.

Ricco Fiorito is the creator of the Cooloo concept, together with Leo Schraven. This is a technology that enables the (furniture) industry to manufacture in a more sustainable way. According to Cooloo, furniture is often difficult to repair or refurbish at the moment. Through the use of a combination of modelling techniques, the Cooloo concept is able to make furniture out of a single piece of material and conserve it. Cooloo is based in Wanssum.

Record

The 2022 edition of the award had a record number of applicants with a total of 28 participants. From that group, the jury selected 6 finalists for the pitch rounds. Out of these, 3 contenders for the award emerged. In addition to the winner, these were Linda Klunder and Max Dijkstra.

With Kumasi Drinks, Linda and her team are trying to combat food waste and waste in incomes by making honest soft drinks from the pulp of the cocoa fruit. Her proposition also draws attention to human rights.

Max Dijkstra aims to restore marine ecosystems on a large scale and in a climate-neutral way with ReefSystems. It focuses on solving destroyed habitats with the help of artificial reefs. Among other things, Max Dijkstra also wants to set up a C02-neutral reef restoration project in Zeeland.
