Classroom teachers have a high workload, or experience that in any case, according to CBS figures. Joep Pernot develops, with Learning Solutions , blended learning or e-learning concepts in collaboration with educational institutions, publishers or companies. He is convinced that blended learning enables better and more contemporary education which can reduce the workload among teachers.

“Teachers are incredibly busy keeping track of everything, and on top of that, the classes are getting bigger these days. Education is under pressure.” Pernot also focuses on teaching methods: “In practice, traditional teaching comes down to a 70-20-10 distribution. That means that students are listening to a teacher 70% of the time, working together 20%, and they are doing something themselves only 10%. Science has demonstrated for a long time already that knowledge is better retained when you participate.”

He would like to turn that around, he begins to explain enthusiastically: “Blended learning allows you to use time much more efficiently. We set up a course with Learning Solutions for training referees for a sports association. Previously, the referees-in-training had to go to a central location around fourteen times to view a PowerPoint presentation. They could also do that at home. In the blended learning environment, there are only four contact moments.”

On the question of whether the personal contact is not bad, Pernot is keenly opposed: “Why drive to Ermelo fourteen times when you can view the same PowerPoint at home, at your own pace?” The software is so developed that the course leader can accurately see how far someone is with the material, and can also see which parts the students are having trouble with. “This allows the teacher to skip over the content that everyone understood at home, and pay extra attention to the parts where they scored less.”

He continues, gesticulating, “I will, in fact, surmise: because teachers have a better overview of what is going on, the classical hours are spent more efficiently. It is no longer the driver of the compulsory material, but focusing on the areas that students have not mastered yet. That really benefits education. I am convinced of that.”

According to Pernot, e-learning has been implemented and developed particularly in the automotive industry. Large brands spend a lot of money on the development of VR learning environments, which are found primarily in the dealer network. Many of these modules are not accessible for MBO training, and they are too costly to develop them themselves. Current technology, since Internet 2.0 which has made Facebook and the like possible, has no more limitations. That means with a clear learning question or learning objective for various target groups, there is already a lot of potential with a limited budget.” Pernot begins to laugh: “Unless you come to us for a gamification a la World of Warcraft, in that case, we do not have the manpower or the in-house technical skills, but a lot can be done.”

Learning Solutions works with a team of about ten people. “There are designers, experts in education, and people for the hard technology. We work very closely with the clients. Because this is a very intensive process, we are not talking about a customer-supplier relationship, but rather a partnership. You need to constantly refine things until you have a good product. Herein lies the challenge to make a book interactive in an attractive manner. You can also go too far with this, like dump a movie everywhere or want to do everything in 3D. It is important to find a good balance in this regard. Lead your students through the material in a playful, contemporary way, at their own pace and in their own time.”

Pernot foresees a bright future for e-learning. More and more companies see that it is important that employees are well aware of the latest technologies. “In this respect, they can choose the traditional manner: drag everyone into a class. Or let the employees take the module home to follow at their own pace.”
