After a very successful first round and winning the quarter finals, Team Rembrandts was stopped in the semifinals of FIRST League in Florida. The Eindhoven based team did win the Industrial Design Award though.
Team Rembrandts is formed around students of Zwijsen College in Veghel, Heerbeeck College in Best, Summa College in Eindhoven, Fontys and TU/e.
Foundation FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 as an educational program to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology. During last years global event, over 400.000 students around the world participated in one of the following FIRST programs:
- – First Lego league Jr. (age 6-10)
- – First Lego league (age 9-14)
- – First Tech Challenge (age 12-18)
- – First Robotics Competition (age 14-18)
In this video, you can see the presentation of the 2017 robot from ‘TeamRembrandts’ in the Netherlands, for the First Robotics Competition. The robots from previous years are also in this video. This robot was created by a team of more than 25 high school students and university students, in a 6 weeks period. During this narrow time frame, the students must design, build and program a robot to perform challenging tasks against a field of international competitors in de USA.
During this process students learn much more than just skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). In order to succeed, the students must also develop their team skills, reach out to their local community, in order to raise funds. And last but not least, the team must communicate their effort and progress to their fans and followers through their own online ‘brand’.
The semifinals in Florida ended out to become a real thriller. After winning and losing one leg each, a decisive extra game had to be played. Only after two more draws, Team Rembrandts was barred from the finals.
