Subscription-based home batteries on the rise

Otovo, the Norwegian solar installation specialist, is introducing a subscription service for home batteries in the Netherlands, reducing households’ dependence on the grid, the company says in a press release. The service is aimed at the 2 million Dutch homes with solar panels.

It is impossible to imagine the Dutch streets without solar panels. More and more roofs are being fitted with these renewable energy sources. With the arrival of subscription-based home batteries by Otovo, solar panel owners now have the opportunity to further increase their sustainability. These home batteries enable households to store and use self-generated energy whenever they want, reducing dependence on the grid. This concept looks like another step in the energy transition and makes it easier for consumers to optimise their energy management.

What are home batteries?

Home batteries, also known as energy storage systems, store excess electricity produced by solar panels during the day. This energy can then be used at times when the sun is not shining, such as in the evening or during peak hours when electricity is usually more expensive. This allows households to better regulate their own energy supply and reduce costs. In addition, home batteries provide a solution during power outages and contribute to a stable electricity grid by smoothing peaks in energy supply and demand.

Market developments and benefits

The home battery market is booming. This is partly due to the growing need for sustainable energy solutions and the desire to increase energy independence. In the Netherlands, the potential is huge, with 2 million homes already equipped with solar panels. This number is expected to continue to grow in the coming years, partly due to initiatives such as Otovo’s.
