Sixty top students from all over the world will participate in the Eindhoven Semicon Summer School (ESSS) starting next week. This is a learning week with an extensive program on the semiconductor industry, from equipment and devices to circuits, systems, and applications, taught by top specialists from leading semiconductor companies and knowledge institutes. Organizations such as Eindhoven University of Technology, ASML, ASM, NXP, SMART Photonics, TSMC, imec, Axelera AI, and Neways set up the week, driven not least by their search for well-trained personnel.

Participants include undergraduate and graduate students from Taiwan, the US, Spain, Italy, Romania, Lithuania, Vietnam, Thailand, and TU/e. The five-day program not only gives students valuable insights into a wide range of semicon topics, but it also puts them in contact with top industry experts, professors, and each other, building a valuable international network.

Keynotes

Students visit semicon companies (ASML, NXP, and SMART Photonics) and receive presentations by thought leaders and specialists on the latest developments, trends, and challenges. The keynote speakers are Paul Verhagen (CFO of ASM), Rob Frijns (CTO of NXP), and Paul de Bot (President TSMC Europe, Middle-East, Africa). ASML CEO Christophe Fouquet and TU/e President Robert-Jan Smits will speak at the opening ceremony. The students also meet young professionals and work together in teams, applying their own professional knowledge as well as insights gained during the summer school.

Silvia Lenaerts, rector magnificus of TU/e: “The EU launched the European Chips Act last year to strengthen Europe’s position in the global semicon industry. The crucial element here is talent: we need to train the semicon top specialists of the future. We want our summer school to play a central role in terms of talent development and networking. The ESSS also shows the unique semicon ecosystem of the Brainport region and the important role of our university in this ecosystem.”

Exciting challenges

Christophe Fouquet, CEO of ASML, concurs: “At ASML, we are happy to open our doors to students from around the world to show them that the semiconductor industry is a challenging and dynamic place to work. Engineers graduating today have a chance to push the boundaries of technology further with a life full of exciting challenges ahead.”

One-stop shop

“The ESSS is truly a first of its kind worldwide, with a comprehensive program focused on semicon, with topics ranging from equipment and devices to circuits, systems, and applications, and with participation from top companies,” said Professor Aida Todri-Sanial, scientific director of the ESSS. “It is a one-stop shop where students can learn about various knowledge areas of semiconductor technology, which helps students shape their further education. In addition, this summer school strengthens our position as a leading semicon university, and it strengthens the semicon ecosystem of TU/e and our partners.”
