Eindhoven ranks seventh when it comes to the most promising global science hubs. This is shown in the new research report by Dealroom.co. The report compares 201 global ecosystems. Eindhoven region scores exceptionally high in the comparison of growth diamonds, thanks to the presence of high quality science, university-educated talent and patents, according to Dealroom’s report.
Dealroom.co is a leading provider of data on start-ups, technology ecosystems and investments. Dealroom.co’s data is used by governments, businesses and civil society organizations to gain greater insight. Today it launches the report “The next generation of tech ecosystems. This contains a ranking of the 201 best ecosystems in the world. The Brainport Eindhoven region ranks 7th on the list of Science Hubs. These are regions that have a leading position in deep tech, university talent and patents. After Oxford, Eindhoven is the highest ranked region in Europe.
Start-up accelerator
Governments, knowledge institutions and companies in Brabant are jointly trying to guide start-ups from idea to success. For example, Braventure is a start-up accelerator that, together with Eindhoven-based organization The Gate, focuses on start-ups around Brainport Eindhoven. This also includes financing resources. For example, there is the Brabant Start-up Fund for financing start-ups in an early phase, and the Brabantse Ontwikkelings Maatschappij (BOM), with, among other things, half a billion in investable capital, guides start-ups in a later stage to scale-up.
‘Making the world a little bit better’
For provincial executive Martijn van Gruijthuijsen, the success of the Brainport region is no surprise: “In Brabant, we are working on tomorrow’s solutions for today’s societal challenges. Start-ups often start with an idea to make the world a little better in their own way, but making that idea a reality is a big challenge. In Brabant we work together with universities, development companies and regions to guide those start-ups to success. This report shows that you need to be in Brabant if you want to have success.”
An excellent start
In the Brainport region, The Gate is the platform for tech start-ups to get off to a flying start. Many of the start-ups responsible for Eindhoven’s high position in the rankings have received a helping hand from The Gate. Director of Brainport Development, Paul van Nunen: “Since we started The Gate, hundreds of start-ups have already been helped, four hundred this year alone. This happens in many different ways; with funding, through advice, by linking them to relevant connections in the ecosystem and so on. It’s working. We therefore have full confidence that the Brainport Eindhoven region will also produce the next global players.”
Top climate
Robert-Jan Smits, TU/e Board Chairman: “The great position in this report is the result of the excellent cooperation of all parties in the Brainport region ecosystem to create a top climate for start-ups. We as TU/e have been focusing for many years on entrepreneurship, challenge-based learning, student teams, and start-ups, and we traditionally have a tremendously strong research collaboration with the high-tech industry, all of which contribute to this result. It’s great that this report once again highlights the region’s leadership position.”
Funding
The financing chain in Brabant has become increasingly closed in recent years. This has a direct positive effect on the success factor of start-ups in the Eindhoven region. For example, with the DeepTechXL Fund I, Brabant recently received a unique €100 million fund that invests in promising, high-tech start-ups and scaleups in the Netherlands. Investments in the fund include strategic partners and co-initiators ASML, Philips, BOM and TNO, as well as PME Pension Fund and Invest-NL.
