Smaller and better chips as a new step in competition with TSMC
With the new generation EUV-chip machines by ASML, Samsung wants to get a step ahead of its competitor TSMC from Taiwan. According to Korea IT News, Samsung has purchased two EUV chip machines this year, to be followed up with another seven next year. With these machines, the production of chips can be raised and improved.
With EUV (Extreme Ultra Violet), Samsung is able to produce 6-nanometer chips. This will be the answer to TSMC’s recent steps to scale up from 10- to 7-nanometer chips, while Samsung was still producing the 8-nanometer version.
According to Korea IT News, Samsung expects to start mass production of the new chips in 2019. More here.
