With its acquisition of OmniPHY, chip manufacturer NXP has acquired new knowledge concerning autonomous driving. OmniPHY has expertise in the field of automotive Ethernet, which enables fast data transfer, which is necessary for autonomous driving.

A revolution in the internal network architecture of newly developed, autonomous cars is underway. In order to safely enter the road, autonomous driving systems often require eight or more cameras, high definition radar and a lidar system. However, the implementation of these techniques raises an important question: “One of the vexing questions of the Autonomous Age is how to move data around the car as fast as possible,” says Ian Riches of the Strategy Analytics Global Automotive Practice.

With the acquisition of OmniPHY, a supplier of automotive Ethernet technologies, NXP can occupy an important position in this rapidly developing area. Over the course of its six-year history, OmniPHY has worked with some of the world’s largest consumer companies and has developed solutions for various industries, including the automotive sector.
