TU Munich has regained some places in the annual QS World University Rankings. For the 2019 list, TUM ended 61st, one spot aboveLudwig-Maximilians-Universität München. For TUM, this means an increase of three spots. LMU reached its third consecutive uplift: from #75 in 2016 (when it had to absorb a fall of 23 places) to #62 in 2019. Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (#64) is the third German University on the QS-list. MIT in Boston is the global #1.
TUM
Consistently featured as one of the highest-ranked universities in Germany in the QS World University Rankings, Technical University of Munich (Technische Universität München), also known as TUM, was founded in 1868 and is a member of the TU9, an association of nine of Germany’s most prestigious technical universities. TUM has 14 academic departments and 40,124 students, of which around 24% are international. It calls itself The Entrepreneurial University and aims to foster a supportive environment for budding entrepreneurs. There are 172 degree programs available including a selection of English-taught courses.
LMU
Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München- the University in the heart of Munich – is recognized as one of Europe’s premier academic and research institutions. Since its founding in 1472, LMU has attracted inspired scholars and talented students from around the globe. Its operation in teaching and research embraces a wide diversity of fields — from the humanities and cultural studies through law, economics and social sciences to medicine and natural sciences. Its Medical Center is, next to the Charité in Berlin, the most prestigious and largest institution of this kind in Germany. LMU has 35,035 students and 3,274 academic staff members.
QS
QS assessed 4,763 universities for the 2019 edition. The QS World University Rankings has existed since 2004 and is, together with the Times Higher Education Ranking and the ARWU/Shanghai Ranking, leading worldwide and the most popular among international prospective students.
The QS World University Rankings is an annual ranking of universities that are ranked, among other things, by the quality of higher education and the academic research at those institutions. Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) is a British company that specializes in educational marketing. The QS rankings are published in a range of media including the American journal U.S. News & World Report.
The ranking results of QS are determined on the basis of six criteria: 40% Academic Reputation, 10% Employer Reputation, 20% Citations per paper (papers period 2011-2016, citations period 2012-2017), 20% Faculty Student, 5% International Faculty and 5% International Students. TU/e scores best on the indicators Citations per Faculty, Faculty Student, and International Faculty. As far as internationalization is concerned, one-third of the academic staff at TU/e now consists of foreign staff covering some 80 nationalities.
