Edwin Hermkens, co-founder and CTO, is leaving MedApp. He is stepping down three years after the company was acquired by publicly traded Redcare Pharmacy (formerly Shop Apotheke). Hermkens started MedApp together with Pit Janssen in 2015, from TU Eindhoven. Together, they created one of the first online pharmacies in the Netherlands.
MedApp won a Gerard & Anton Award in 2018.
According to the outgoing CTO, the vision that made Redcare great in recent years calls for stronger operational focus and tighter organization management. Says Hermkens, “Where the focus on technology and the tight positioning of our product in recent years was decisive for our growth, there is now a solid foundation on which to continue building. The new focus and a managerial role suit me less. I am too much of a pioneer who enjoys setting something in motion from nothing. I have therefore decided to continue as an entrepreneur and close this chapter. After all these years, that’s not an easy decision, but ultimately the best decision.”
Co-founder Pit Janssen will remain with MedApp as CEO. Hermkens will still advise in the background as a consultant where needed.
Hermkens is also active as the founder of Wolfpack, the TU/e campus-based software development agency. Wolfpack was the first investor in MedApp and has grown considerably in recent years. Hermkens will explore new concepts in the field of software & AI in the coming years from Wolfpack and in cooperation with the TU/e.
Pit Janssen regrets the departure of his partner but understands his decision. “MedApp continues, even without him, to do everything possible to make life with medication easier.”
