Gerard & Anton Awards 2023
Author profile picture

Every year, Innovation Origins spotlights ten startups from the Brainport region. These are ten innovative start-ups of which we expect great things in the coming year. For each of these start-ups a Gerard & Anton Award is waiting: not only as a reward for the recent development, but especially as an incentive to go even further.

The previous nine editions show that this helps: the success rate of the former winners is above average. That conclusion was already firmly established in 2022 via the results of the comprehensive survey of former winners conducted last year by Strategy Unit and IO. This year there is additional research, the results of which will be released on July 3.

  • The date for the tenth edition of the Gerard & Anton Awards is July 3;
  • Reserve your spot for the party here: Eventbrite.
  • Nominations for one of the ten winners are welcome until May 28;
  • Send your nominations to [email protected]

The selection for the tenth edition of this event takes place with the help of the public and an expert jury led by Alderman Stijn Steenbakkers. The award ceremony is on July 3 at 17:00 in the anniversary tent of the 25-year High Tech Campus. As in previous years, the presentation will be in the hands of Beatrix Bos and Bert-Jan Woertman. Registration for the event starts soon (keep an eye on our website!), but a contribution in the form of a nomination is already welcome: send it to [email protected] by May 28. May 28, isn’t that very soon? Yes, that’s fast – this way the jury deliberations can take place in time.

History of Gerard & Anton Award

Since 2014, we have had a total of 90 winners on stage. As of 2016, this is done under the name “Gerard & Anton Award,” after the best-known startup from the region. Across the board, the success rate of the winning startups is unprecedentedly high: where on average about 15-20% of startups are structurally successful, in this group it is more than 75%.

Former winners include names as:

  • Sorama (2014, founder Rick Scholte was awarded Engineer of the Year a few years later).
  • Ioniqa (2015, now the company makes the – recycled – bottles for Coca-Cola)
  • Smart Photonics (2015, now driving the global photonics industry)
  • LifeSense (2016, with the now globally sold sensor tab that can prevent incontinence)
  • Sendcloud (2016, one of the only Dutch unicorns)
  • Lightyear (2017, talking about the art of trial and error…)
  • Xeltis (2017, with the revolutionary technology around the ‘growing along’ artificial heart)
  • Hable (2019, enables blind people worldwide to easily use their smartphones)
  • Carbyon (2020, busy making CO2 an opportunity rather than a problem)
  • Axelera AI (2022, with now 50 million in investment further along)
  • GrAI Matter Labs (2023, which came under the wings of SnapChat immediately after the awards ceremony)

The bar for putting together a good top 10 is high. Who do we want to nominate for this year? Which start-up is still quietly working but will soon make a big move? Let us know, and in doing so, help the judges get a long list: [email protected].
