The New York company JW Player closed a new investment round of $ 20 million. This round will help to develop a “Independent Video Ecosystem”. This platform gives publishers the freedom of keeping their audience within their own property instead of handing them over to parties like Youtube and Facebook.
JW Player has been around since 2005 and has its roots in Eindhoven. It was founded by the then Design Academy student Jeroen Wijering. He developed a Flash video player which was soon used by many companies to embed video in web pages. One of the first users was then young Youtube.
The last investment round is the fifth (D) large investment round in the company. In this round existing investors, led by VC firm Greycroft, reinvested.
