As June 2023 has proven to be the hottest and sunniest month ever in the Netherlands, it’s apparent that climate change is altering our local weather patterns, pushing us closer toward a Mediterranean-like climate. Adapting to such a climate will necessitate changes in our daily routines, lifestyle, and mindset. Laio gathered some practical tips on how to adapt to and thrive in a more Mediterranean climate:

1. Stay Hydrated:

Hydration is crucial in warmer climates, especially during peak heat hours. Keep a bottle of water with you at all times and consume at least 2-3 liters daily. Hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges are also excellent options.

2. Protect Your Skin:

Sun exposure is much higher in a Mediterranean climate. Protect your skin by wearing sunscreen with a high SPF, even on cloudy days. Wearing wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and light, long-sleeved clothing can also protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

3. Adjust Your Schedule:

Adopt the Mediterranean habit of a mid-day siesta during the hottest part of the day. Try to schedule outdoor activities for early morning or late evening when temperatures are lower.

4. Home Insulation:

A well-insulated home not only keeps you warm in winter but also cool in summer. Consider investing in proper insulation for your home. Light-colored curtains and blinds can also help keep the heat out.

5. Cooling Systems:

Installing an effective cooling system, like an air conditioner or a fan, can make your indoor environment more comfortable. If possible, consider more sustainable cooling systems like green roofs or cool roofs.

6. Water Management:

Mediterranean climates are characterized not only by hot summers but also by dry periods. Invest in water-saving appliances, use water-efficient plants in your garden, and consider collecting rainwater for future use.

7. Change Your Diet:

Mediterranean diets are tailored to suit warmer climates and are renowned for their health benefits. Consuming lighter meals with lots of fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins can keep you feeling refreshed and energized.

8. Clothing:

Swap heavy and dark clothing for light and breathable fabrics. Linen and cotton are excellent choices for this climate. Sunglasses, hats, and umbrellas can also be handy on particularly sunny days.

9. Be Fire Conscious:

Warmer, drier climates can increase the risk of wildfires. If you live near forests or fields, ensure you maintain a safe distance between vegetation and your home. Also, consider having a fire safety plan.

10. Enjoy Outdoor Activities:

Embrace the beauty of a Mediterranean climate by enjoying outdoor activities. Swimming, cycling, or just enjoying a walk in the evening can be very pleasant.

11. Sustainable Transport:

With more sunshine, consider investing in solar-powered devices or electric vehicles. Biking or walking is also great for shorter distances.

12. Protect Local Biodiversity:

Climate change can disrupt local ecosystems. Consider creating a garden that supports local wildlife or contribute to conservation organizations.

As we continue to witness climate change, adaptation is the key. With thoughtful lifestyle changes, we can survive and thrive in a more Mediterranean-like climate. Remember, playing our part in mitigating climate change through sustainable practices is also crucial.
