Each week, in our Sunday newsletter, we look back on the past seven days. Regarding content, we always do so at the initiative of our cartoonist, Albert Jan Rasker. He chooses a subject, draws a picture, and we take it from there.
We’ve always known that great things come from High Tech Campus number 27. It looks like our old neighbours Carbyon will achieve what many climate-tech companies have so far failed to do. Last week, the company secured an investment round of €15.3 million. So it is another step closer to capturing CO₂ from the atmosphere on a large scale. We spoke to CEO of the company Hans de Neve. CU not CO₂!
IO On Stage: Fred Bakker x Aafke Eppinga
Tickets are now available for our very first IO On Stage event! These events feature one of our editors in conversation with a leading scientist, entrepreneur, or expert. I’ll be kicking off on September 12th with an interview with Fred Bakker.
In his book Unleashing the Power of European Innovation, Bakker explores what makes Europe stand out in the global race for technological advancement. At the heart of his analysis is the concept of “sharing brainpower,” a uniquely European strategy that fosters collaboration between government, industry, and science. I’m really looking forward to interview Fred. Don’t miss the chance to join the conversation—register for the event here!
DSA Fundfest goes Eindhoven!
Talking about investments; October will see the third edition of FundFest hosted by the Dutch Startup Association (DSA). DSA is the Netherlands’ largest independent representative of startups, scaleups, and innovation. In addition to initiating a coalition that publishes quarterly investments in startups and scaleups, DSA launched FundFest—each quarter, startups and scaleups that received funding during that period and investors come together.
For the third edition, DSA and Innovation Origins are teaming up to host simultaneous events in both Amsterdam and Eindhoven, bringing together entrepreneurs and investors. Want to be part of it? You’ve got three more weeks to secure funding or make an investment, as it’s invite-only! 😉 These startups and investors are sure of a ticket already:
- 5 crucial investments of this summer: facial recognition, a nanoprinter, and a plug-and-play hydrogen generator
- Investment of the month: VSParticles’ nanoprinter brings energy transition a step further
Here’s what else struck us last week:
- Must read of this week: Jaap Haartsen invented Bluetooth: ‘It took years before its impact dawned on me’
- Stricter export rules ASML: NL now in line with US
- Dutch technical sectors call for easier access to immigrant workers
- Heerlen has the best air quality, Eindhoven the worst
- Leveraging AI for house-hunting: Innovative alternatives for the student housing crisis

Have a good week!
