SMART Photonics, the Netherlands-based leader in photonic integrated circuits, has successfully raised an additional €100 million from a consortium of Dutch industry and financial entities. Key players from the semiconductor sector, including ASML, NXP and VDL Groep, are part of this investment round, alongside financial institutions such as ING, BOP Impact Ventures, and Deep Tech Fund. Previous investors have also re-invested. The Dutch government will contribute €60 million, says the company in a press release.

  • SMART Photonics has successfully raised €100 million.
  • The government’s involvement is remarkable.
  • SMART Photonics wants to strengthen its role as a leading manufacturer of chips in Europe.

Government support

The Dutch Government’s involvement in this funding round is noteworthy. They are contributing public funding as part of the approved National Growth Fund project PhotonDelta. Demissionary Minister Micky Adriaansens of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy stated, “We believe in the Netherlands as a leading international hub for the development of the fast-growing integrated photonics industry. That’s why we invest both through the National Growth Fund project PhotonDelta in the whole ecosystem and through our dedicated Deep Tech Fund with specific funding for start-ups and scale-ups who focus on innovative complex technology such as SMART Photonics.”

Leading manufacturer

With this funding, SMART Photonics aims to fortify its role as the leading manufacturer of next-generation chips in a resilient European photonic value chain. The funds will be used to expand its manufacturing capabilities and accelerate the development of the company’s photonic integrated chip technology platforms and its Process Design Kits (PDKs).
