MAN Truck & Bus, a European truck manufacturer, is going to launch a hydrogen combustion engine. As early as 2025, 200 units will be delivered to customers in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Iceland and other non-European countries. The trucks will have a range of about 600 kilometers.

Why you need to know this:

For long-distance transportation, hydrogen is a sustainable alternative to diesel.

The vehicle, the “MAN hTGX,” is suitable for transporting heavy goods – such as construction work, tank transport, timber transport or wind turbine blades. Among other things, the truck is a sustainable alternative to battery-electric trucks, in areas without sufficient charging infrastructure.

Maasvlakte

The hydrogen trucks will operate at the Maasvlakte in the Netherlands. This choice of the Netherlands was motivated by the fact that this country has many hydrogen projects underway and its own production of hydrogen.

Other manufacturers

Other manufacturers are also taking up the challenge of building hydrogen trucks. At the beginning of this year, it was announced that Daimler Truck, the company behind Mercedes-Benz and others, will start an extensive trial of hydrogen trucks on public roads in Germany.
