The official opening of the Vestdijk as International Boulevard is a good occasion for a big celebration for the international community of Eindhoven. On June 12 there will be three events in and around the VDMA: the international festival, the I Am Not A Tourist event and a get-together of Expatriate Spouses Initiative.
Carmen Panos, herself originating from Spain, has the overview of the three planned events. On a map of the VDMA-complex she has pointed out all the activities, and the participants behind them. She emphasises that everybody is welcome on June 12. “Of course this is a festival for the internationals, but this is also a day on which Eindhovenaren can learn about their new neighbours.”
The day begins with a parade that starts at noon from the Frits Philips statue on the Markt. Via Smalle Haven the parade will return to the Vestdijk – the international boulevard. There, at the VDMA, the Expat Center and The Hub for Expats are located. “The place where expats and internationals feel at home.”
The rest of the afternoon and evening there’s plenty of time and occasion to celebrate, through a combination of music, workshops and of course food and drinks from all cultures. In the courtyard of the VDMA visitors can get a taste of all the delights from countries like Spain, Italy, India, Venezuela and Mexico. Also, the international students from TU/e will present themselves. The workshops are both serious and relaxed: focus is for example on the Dutch school system, but also on crafts and drawing.
