Artificial intelligence is transforming the dating landscape. From virtual dates to AI-driven matchmaking, technology offers countless new possibilities. But there are also risks. Critics warn of loss of genuine connection.
Social Discovery Group (SDG), the company behind more than 70 dating and social discovery sites and apps with a strong focus on AI technologies, recently released a report on how loneliness affects the use of dating apps. The study found that 67% of users turned to dating platforms and AI in the past year to build both platonic and romantic relationships and reduce feelings of loneliness. Time spent by users on these apps has increased 35% since 2022.
AI tools
In recent years, new AI-powered dating tools have entered app stores. These technologies are becoming increasingly popular among users looking for love and companionship in the digital world. AI is being used to enhance profiles, generate messages, and even assist with first dates.
Opening phrases
For example, AI is increasingly being used to help users of dating apps with opening sentences. Some apps offer a range of AI-generated opening sentences, where users can choose from different styles, such as friendly, funny, or a bit edgy. This helps users get over their initial uncertainty and develop their communication skills. Roman Khaves, co-founder of the AI dating assistant Rizz, explained that coming up with a good opening line is challenging for many people. Men in particular often feel extra pressure to start the conversation and impress with an original opener.
Grindr, an app for (mostly) men who want to have sex with men, is also betting on AI. The app has a chatbot assistant, the Grindr Wingman. That can generate conversation starters based on a chat history.
AI goes on dates for you
On some apps, it goes a step further. Some companies are trying to alleviate “dating fatigue” that people experience with AI. One way they do this is by offering AI-simulated blind dates. Volar Dating, which launched in the U.S. earlier this year, is an example. In the sign-up process, the user provides information about themselves to a chatbot, such as age, hometown, and hobbies. The AI then simulates a first date between two people.
AI as an aid to loneliness
In a world where loneliness is a growing problem, AI offers an innovative solution. Many people are turning to AI and online platforms to reduce feelings of isolation. AI dating apps such as Blush and Volar Dating simulate interactions that give users a sense of companionship. These tools are particularly popular among younger users and men. They use AI to receive emotional support as well as to improve their social skills.
The downside
Despite the benefits, there are also downsides to using AI in relationships. A major concern is the lack of human connection, empathy and emotional understanding that AI cannot provide. There are also ethical and privacy issues, given the amount of personal data required for AI to be effective. In addition, AI algorithms may be biased.
The future of relationships in the digital age requires a balance between technological efficiency and human emotion. While AI offers new opportunities for connection, the need for genuine human interaction remains essential.
