The AI Summit Brainport is approaching. Nine AI startups have been selected for the finals of the AI Pitch Competition. They will be in the spotlight on November 7th. These startups, built on themes ranging from healthcare to energy, will present their innovative solutions to a panel of experts and an audience eager to see how AI can shape the future. With such a diverse lineup, the event promises to be a dynamic exploration of AI’s potential to address the significant challenges of our time.
In recent weeks, we have interviewed all of the finalists – Dembrane, Baitech/BigLife, Exergy, Aevai Health, BrainBite, MoreMovement, Maps Untold, TouchPulse and Meterd – on relevant topics within their missions. Today, we distill some of the most striking answers from each finalist, arranged according to the eight key questions they answered. Each answer provides insight into how these startups view how AI can play a role in solving grand challenges.
1. Technical Innovation: What specific AI technology or algorithm is at the core of your solution, and how does it differentiate from existing approaches in the industry?
Exergy’s solution is built on a hybrid modeling framework, combining AI-driven machine learning algorithms (such as neural networks and PCA) with traditional chemical engineering models like thermodynamics and chemical kinetics. Meanwhile, BrainBite leverages AI mentorship and personalized learning paths tailored to children’s unique learning needs. The core AI technology utilizes adaptive learning algorithms that adjust based on a child’s progress and preferences. On a different note, Aevai Health is pioneering the use of Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) to transform how biobanks engage with their participants. Instead of relying on traditional AI models that need extensive data training, Aevai’s approach retrieves relevant information from a specialized, curated medical database.
2. Scalability and Practical Application: How scalable is your AI solution, and what are the primary challenges you anticipate in bringing it to a global or large-scale market?
Scaling presents unique challenges for each startup. Meterd highlights the difficulty of adapting their energy management platform to various regulatory environments across different countries, noting that custom adjustments are often necessary to meet diverse standards. TouchPulse, focusing on visually impaired persons (VIPs) and measuring real-time customer emotions, faces challenges in ensuring accurate performance across languages and cultural contexts but plans to leverage local partnerships to expand effectively. MoreMovement, whose fitness-focused AI provides personalized health insights, is prepared to integrate with wearable devices, making global expansion feasible through compatibility with popular health tech products.
3. Ethical Considerations: How does your startup address potential ethical concerns about bias, fairness, or transparency in AI decision-making?
Maps Untold prioritizes user privacy and doesn’t rely on social media logins or personal data. Instead, users simply input a favorite restaurant from home, and its AI generates tailored recommendations for their destination. Aevai Health, dealing with sensitive health data, operates using a privacy-preserving language model that doesn’t store participant data; all information is transferred directly to the client’s servers. By utilizing proprietary, curated datasets specific to each biobank, Aevai strives to keep the chatbot accurate and unbiased. Bias, fairness, and transparency are also significant topics for Dembrane. Its data analysis tool strongly boosts transparency and Dembrane only uses AI when needed.
4. Societal Impact: In what ways do you believe your AI solution can positively impact society? Are there any unintended societal risks or challenges you foresee, and how are you preparing to handle them?
BaiTech envisions a future where animal welfare in agriculture improves through AI, helping reduce the need for antibiotics and enhancing overall farm productivity. They acknowledge the risk of dependence on technology in farming but work closely with farmers to keep human oversight central. MoreMovement foresees significant benefits in preventative health by making fitness insights accessible to all, although they are mindful of potential data privacy issues and are actively implementing strict security protocols. BrainBite.ai sees AI as an enabler of creative expression, allowing individuals to amplify their ideas without fearing replacement by machines, which promotes a balanced use of AI as a collaborative tool rather than a substitute.
5. Entrepreneurial Journey: What has been the biggest hurdle in launching your AI startup, and how did you overcome it? How has the current AI landscape shaped your business model and growth strategy?
Exergy found that gaining initial trust from energy sector partners was challenging; they overcame this by running pilot programs that demonstrated measurable efficiency gains. TouchPulse struggled with finding the right balance between technological complexity and user-friendliness, a challenge they addressed by refining their user interface based on customer feedback. Maps Untold experienced that breaking into the competitive leisure and travel software market required proving its reliability. Dozens of successful pilots did this.
6. Regulation and Compliance: How are you preparing for the increasing regulatory frameworks around AI, such as GDPR, AI Act, or other data privacy laws? How does this impact your innovation and development process?
Meterd prepares for compliance by designing its platform with GDPR as a core component, ensuring user data is protected while meeting European standards for privacy. Aevai Health implements stringent security measures, particularly given the sensitivity of health data, to align with healthcare industry regulations. This is a critical factor in their strategy for scaling in the EU and beyond. Dembrane currently addresses privacy by not tracking who is saying what. This way, only the ideas and critiques are stored, not who stated them. Dembrane is GDPR compliant by handling all personal data on self-hosted models or servers hosted in the EU.
7. Future Vision: What is your long-term vision for your AI solution? How do you see your technology evolving over the next 5 to 10 years, and what role do you expect your company to play in shaping the future of AI?
In the long run, MoreMovement aims to become a leader in AI-based preventative health, predicting and addressing health risks before they arise through enhanced integration with global health services. BrainBite.ai envisions a creative industry where AI becomes an essential partner for creators, helping people explore ideas more deeply and innovatively. Dembrane aims to become a democratic membrane within any community, enabling conversations where every member can join and be heard. This way, Dembrane wants to contribute to a world where, as communities get larger, they get wiser, more connected, and more fair.
8. The AI Pitch Competition: Who will win this contest?
