The discovery by a German researcher at Ruhr University Bochum is particularly significant for the multi-billion dollar semiconductor manufacturing industry.
The Synfuel project combines several technologies to make green fuel for the transport sector. Among other things, they make use of biomass and wind energy.
"To make sure that you always get that energy exactly where and when you need it, you need smart storage and conversion."
The new technology will help reduce investment and operational costs considerably, by up to 50 and 80% respectively.
