Kevin Kelly is one of the speakers at the Conference for the Curious, March 29 and 30 in the Klokgebouw in Eindhoven. The Conference is part of STRP Biennale. With it, VPRO Medialab and STRP are joining forces in the search for creative and innovative developments within technology, e-culture and media. There will be keynotes, performances and inspiring encounters. On top of Kevin Kelly, pioneers like Lance Weiler, Aina Abiodun, Stelarc and Floris Kaayk will take care of an ensemble of new media manifestations that stimulate the senses and imagination.

Theme of Conference for the Curious on 29 March is Senses & Sensors and will be carried out by STRP. Senses & Sensors is all about perception and the many ways in which technology influences and continually pushes this perception. It is an exploration of the high touch in high tech, which zooms in on the extensive intermingling of the biological and the technological. On Wednesday 29 March STRP will invite twelve speakers from culture and science, including the artists Stelarc, Tobias Revell, and Memo Akten, who will delve deeper into the theme Senses & Sensors.

On Wednesday evening, none other than Kevin Kelly will give a keynote. Kelly is one of the founders of tech magazine Wired and author of bestsellers like What Technology Wants and The Inevitable, released last year. In this last book he sketches an image of the driving forces that, in his opinion, will define the way in which technology will develop during the next thirty years. So no stories about fancy gadgets or hip trends, but a visionary outlook on the future from one of the few experts who has been involved with digital technology and the internet for thirty years and continues to look forward.

On 30 March Conference for the Curious concludes VPRO Medialab’s travelling dialogue through five Dutch media festivals. Exploring the future of storytelling is the central theme. Six aspects of telling stories form the leitmotif in the programme: non-fiction stories, immersive stories, stories in data, spreading stories, mobile stories and sensing stories. The foundation of the conference is the Meet the Maker format in which over 300 visitors can choose one of 18 radical media innovators to sit around the table and share ideas with. These sessions are just one part of the extensive programme of three interesting keynotes, guided STRP Expo Tours, live performances, pitching for funding, Exploding Cinema and more.

With Lance Weiler, VPRO Medialab brings to Eindhoven a cultural hacker and next-level filmmaker who will give shape and a voice to the future. WIRED called him: ‘1 of the 25 most important makers who reinvented entertainment.’ Weiler is a director, writer and experience designer and teaches at Columbia University about the art and craftsmanship of storytelling in the 21e century.

Aina Abiodun is the founder of StoryCode, a worldwide open source network of more than 2000 cross-medial makers. She is also Head of Strategy at Sideways, a creative agency in New York, where she develops innovative strategies for digital marketing.

Animator and film director Floris Kaayk talks about his new work and the way in which he uses mass-media in a natural and original way. Artist Sander Veenhof transports us into the world of Augmented Reality. Interaction designer Klasien van de Zandschulp shows how Location Based Storytelling works.
