Initial clinical studies show that Sirius Pintuition is safe and effective in breast cancer surgery, the Eindhoven based company says. The study was conducted by oncology surgeon Maud Bessems of the Jeroen Bosch Hospital (JBZ) in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. “The system provides millimeter-accurate feedback, which is an improvement over the current standard,” she says. “It’s great to work with a startup such as Sirius Medical on improving the surgical technique for breast cancer patients”.
The first commercial application of the Pintuition has also recently taken place at the Elisabeth-TweeSteden hospital (ETZ) in Tilburg.
Doctors are performing increasingly complex surgeries because they have to remove ever smaller tumors. This is because the diagnosis of breast cancer, among other things, has improved in recent decades and tumors are detected at an earlier stage. Until now, surgeons used a metal localization wire or radioactive seeds to locate tumors in the breast and other soft tissue. Sirius offers oncology surgeons a more precise and user-friendly solution using magnets.

The Sirius Pintuition ‘seed’ can be placed up to 180 days before surgery to mark a breast tumor or other soft tissue tumor. During surgery, the Sirius Pintuition Probe provides accurate real-time feedback to guide the surgeon to the marked tissue. The Probe can be reused and is compatible with metal instruments commonly used in surgery.
